Trailer Talk Thursday: Source Code, Bad Teacher and Arthur

Hey everybody, Travis from The Movie Encyclopedia here with another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday where I bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.
While a lot of movies may not make my cut for “Top 10 Most Anticipated,” that doesn’t mean I don’t look forward to plenty of movies coming out each year. And trust me when I say a trailer can really change someones mind. Battle: LA, Apollo 18 and Thor are ones that quickly come to mind. Recently trailers for three movies I’m looking forward to have come out and trust me when I say their trailer lives up to my hype: a futuristic thriller, a raunchy teacher comedy and a remake of one of my favorite comedy classics. 
First up is futuristic thriller…Source Code-
Source Code stars love him or hate him actor Jake Gyllenhaal as Cap. Colter Stevens, a decorated soldier who one day wakes up on a train and finds himself in another mans body. Shortly after he awakens, the train blows up and he dies. He soon comes to realize that he’s part of an experiment known as the “source code” which allows a person to transport himself into the body of someone else eight minutes before he dies. The people in charge (Vera Farmiga and Jeffery Wright) have tasked him with finding out who is behind the bombing of the train he was on and to potentially stop it from happening again. But the more he goes back the more he falls for a woman on the train (Michelle Monaghan) and the harder it becomes for him to grasp that she is dead and he seemingly can’t do anything to stop that.

It’s a unique concept and these kind of thrillers are ones that I tend to like. I’m also a huge fan of mysteries that involve changing fate or preventing something from ever happening so Source Code seems right up my alley. I’m not Jake’s biggest fan but I do think he can be a talented actor and he sure is in this one so hopefully the film lives up to my expectations.

Next up is the new red band trailer for raunch comedy Bad Teacher-

No it is not a sequel to Bad Santa (although that would be pretty cool) but instead a film where Cameron Diaz gets to be as filthy mouthed as she wants. But unlike The Sweetest Thing, this one is actually funny. Diaz plays Elizabeth, a teacher who is about as bad as it comes. She gets high, drinks and then shows up to class hungover and pretty much doesn’t give a crap about any of her students. She’s also a total golddigger but her attempts at finding a rich husband aren’t going too well. She tries to get the new substitute (Justin Timberlake…yeah he’s totally a teacher) to love her but she rations that he likes big boobs, something she doesn’t have. So to remedy that, she competes in a contest where the teacher with the best class gets a raise large enough for her to get her boob job. Classy…

I think it’s actually pretty funny. Sure it doesn’t blow me out of the water but I did laugh out loud a few times and I think Cameron and Jason Seagal (who plays a PE teacher) have great comedic chemistry so I’m hopeful. My only concern is that it pulls the “good jokes in the trailer leaving nothing funny during” thing like Due Date did but I think there is potential for it to be really funny. Like a raunchy School of Rock but with less music and a better looking lead.
Finally is a remake of a classic comedy…Arthur-
The original Arthur was one of my favorite all time comedies so when I originally heard they were making a remake, I was a bit hesitant. Then I saw the cast and immediately perked up. Despite his crazed persona, Russell Brand, at least in my opinion, is one of the best comic actors working today. His timing is impeccable, his charisma is irresistible, he commands the screen whenever he is on and he verges on over the top but without ever crossing the line, leading to some great moments whenever he is on screen. Add in the fantastic Helen Mirren, who I believe could read the phone book and win an Oscar, as well as Jennifer Garner, my original Hollywood crush and you got a film that I am really looking forward to. It doesn’t hurt the trailer is hysterical either. Hopefully we have another great darkhorse comedy this year with Arthur like we did with Get Him to the Greek last year.

The gang of four is back after a one-week hiatus to bring you a new kind of LAMBcast. Jason, James, Nick and Dylan couldn’t find anything worth discussing in the new release section, so we watched This Is Spinal Tap (for the first time!) and convened to break it down. Smell the Glove, baby!!

As we discussed during the taping of the last LAMBcast, we think it’s high time to bring back the LAMB Movie of the Month, and we’re gonna tie it in with the LAMBcast.

So, I looked at the upcoming schedule and have planned for the event to take place on April 16. What we’ll do is this:

* I’ve listed several movies in a poll below. Select which one you would like to be the next MOTM. If you have suggestions for a future MOTM, post them in the comments section here.

* The poll will run for one week. When it’s finished, I’ll put up another post with the results.

* From that point, you’ll have over a month to watch and write about the movie. I’d like for everyone to hold their posts until 4/16, so it’ll be a true blog-a-thon on that day.

* Whoever is interested can join in on the LAMBcast for that movie, to be recorded one week prior to the event (4/9 in this case). Spots might fill up quickly, so head over to the thread at the Forums to claim yours (max. of 5 people). The LAMBcast for the MOTM will go live on 4/16 as well, as will a poll to decide the next movie.
