Movie of the Month/LAMBcast #64: Black Dynamite

Alright you jive-ass turkeys…it’s time to shut up and listen, ’cause grown ups is talking.

That’s right, it’s time for the Movie of the Month, and with it, the LAMBcast dedicated to said movie. If you haven’t seen the 2009 comedy that kisses the feet of the blaxploitation genre just prior to sweeping those feet from the ground, you’re missing out. Can you dig it? So kick back, have yourself some Anaconda malt liquor, and try to make the connection between something that “melts in your mouth” and “Little Richard.”

If you’re having trouble with that one, in the meantime you can check out all these badass fellow LAMBs that took part in the MOTM by writing about the comedy classic that is Black Dynamite:

Big Thoughts From a Small Mind
Big Thoughts From a Small Mind (2)
Net-flixation
A Life in Equinox
Bargain Bin Review
The Film Cynics
Jack L. Film Reviews
French Toast Sunday
Can’t Explain
Cinema Sights
Rachel’s Reel Reviews
Blog Cabins

It’s also time to vote on next month’s movie. I’ve included many of the choices from last month, but swapped a few out to keep it interesting. You have one week to vote.

If all that’s not enough for you, the LAMBcast took on BD as well. Jason, Nick, Stevee, Aiden and Dylan tried to analyze the film on a deep level, but mostly just riff on all the awesome things contained within.

Also on tap:

* LAMB of the Week
* Trailer Talk: Crazy. Stupid. Love.
* Last LAMB Standing

For the LAMB of the Week, we take a look at LAMB #674, moviesandsongs365:

Alright, you know what the shit this is all about, so let’s cut to the chase:

John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone
Not gonna get it, but love that he’s nominated. As if having a recurring role in Eastbound & Down wasn’t awesome enough, here comes Hawkes as Teardrop - the most badass backwoods hillbilly uncle in the trailer park - and he deserves the recognition for his performance just as much as Jennifer Lawrence does hers. Love actors who manage to get so much across with so little effort and that’s exactly what Hawkes did better than anyone else in this category. Too bad he’s a no-name these days, but here’s to hoping he gets his due and becomes a household name in no time flat.
Geoffrey Rush for The King’s Speech
Probably won’t get it, but it’s so damn good to see him at the top of his game for the first time since Shine. All those Pirates of the Caribbean movies are forgiven, generally everything that wasn’t Shine or Quills has been forgiven thanks to his performance as King Bertie’s speech therapist, Lionel Logue. Dude was a fantastic complement to Firth, had the best lines in the movie and it was such a refreshing reminder of what Rush is actually capable of when he’s not cashing in fatass checks from Jerry Bruckheimer.
Jeremy Renner for The Town
How he got a nod over Andrew Garfield is truly one of history’s mysteries. I mean, he was fine in The Town, but what the fuck? Like anyone walked out of the theater and thought, “Someone give that Jeremy Renner an Oscar for this performance of a lifetime!” Nothing against the guy, it’s not that he’s a bad actor or anything, I just have no effing clue where this nom came from.
Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are All Right
Not gonna get it, but for a guy who hasn’t really left an impression on me since You Can Count on Me, he was legit as sperm donor Terry Prescott. I realize that might be blasphemy considering that everyone loves Mark Ruffalo, but he was fun, he added a great dynamic to an already interesting premise and I don’t have a bad thing to say about him. That “maybe he’s stoned, maybe he’s not” shtick of his worked wonders, but alas, he’s not gonna get it.
Christian Bale for The Fighter
Oh yeah, he’s gonna get it. Homey’s got this one in the bag, folks. Up until recently, Bale’s been known for three things: being a total badass, being in Newsies, and single-handedly destroying his body by gaining and losing weight fast than a relapsed Biggest Loser contestant. Granted, he’s still known for all these things and will probably keep on doing ‘em until his central nervous system entirely collapses, but his turn here as Dicky Eklund is the first time since American Psycho that Bale’s really gone outside of his comfort zone and shown that he’s got range that any actor would kill for. Amazing that a Welsh guy with the physical fitness record of Usain Bolt’s and Lou Ferrigno’s bastard love child managed to play a crackhead from Lowell, Mass. so convincingly, but it really was one of the best performances of the year by a long shot. Then again, let’s not kid ourselves, it was only a matter of time for this guy.

Well, that’s it, folks. Word to your mother.

LAMB Leaderboard updated for April!

After quite a few months of lose contention, Cut the Crap Movie Reviews has finally taken over the top spot in the Leaderboard. Congrats!

Twas a busy month for new/returning entrants, with six sites on the board this month that weren’t there last month, led by the #2 with a bullet This Guy Over Here. Not bad news on the generic banner front, as there are just three, and those are from some pretty new LAMBs.

Speaking of LAMB Banners, it was finally a bit of a down month in terms of new banners received, with just three. The new ones hanging proudly in the Gallery are the banners for Film Intel, The Stories That Really Mattered, and We Have Beards. Thanks to those sites. Their banners have also been inserted into the Random LAMB Banner box.

Want yours in there? Just send it to me. More details on that here.

For Your Consideration: Cut the Crap Movie Reviews

Hey you! Send me an FYC image and I will put it up! I don’t care if I get one from 50 sites, I’ll find a way to get them all up, and as soon as possible (the nomination voting period only lasts until May 12th!). When you’re ready to vote, do it here: http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/482056

FYC #8 is from LAMB #368, perennial Leaderboard contender Cut the Crap Movie Reviews.

The LAMB Devours the Oscars - Best Sound Editing

Well, folks, get Granny on the phone and hold on to your Snuggies ’cause the moment you’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived like a mighty phoenix reborn from the ash of a most glorious death…THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEES FOR BEST SOUND EDITING ARE IN! Screw the sound mixers, these guys are the real effing deal and I don’t know about you, but I am freakin’ PUMPED about this year’s roster. Why is that? Oh, I don’t know. Does the name “Gwendolyn Yates Whittle” ring any bells? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Shove it, jerk. So for all you posers out there trying to act like they know what the hell you’re talking about (’cause you don’t…served!), let me break it down for ya’. The folks over at Wikipedia would like you to believe that the award for Best Sound Editing is “granted yearly to a film exhibiting the finest or most aesthetic sound editing or sound design.” Yeah, sure it is, jackass. The double truth, Ruth, is that sound editing is about one thing and one thing only: EXPLOSIONS. Pants-crapping explosions that shake you to the marrow and give you night terrors when you snore too loud. Wondering why Up in the Air isn’t nominated? Get the hell out of here, you and your severance package. This award’s about being awesome, being loud and being awesomely loud, and these are the audio gods we have to thank for blessing us with their talents.

First up we got Christopher Boyes and Gwendolyn Yates Whittle (oh snap!) for Avatar. BOOM! Lots of noise going on in this piece. We got the suped up power loaders from Aliens shooting down an army of blue circus freaks, mutant pterodactyls throwing hover planes into floating canyons and a lot of sounds I’ve never even heard before from animals that I’m pretty sure I’ve seen twice in real life. Need I say more? I think Boyes and Whittle are the ones to beat at the moment, but that’s just me.

Next up at bat is Paul N.J Ottosson (the N.J. stands for “No Joke”) for The Hurt Locker. KA-POW! Now we’re dealing with bombs people, bombs in your face and bombs up your bottom. Road side bombs, eight-in-one wonder bombs, bombs in slo-motion, bombs like you wouldn’t believe. The Hurt Locker is the only pick here that is actually all about blowing crap up, so this has a good chance at a win, even though it’s severely lacking in the power loader department.

Rounding up on third is Wylie “The State Man” Stateman for Inglourious Basterds. BADOOSH! Features two angry Jewish guys unloading two full magazines from an automatic rifle into Hitler’s dead face. I rest my case, a-thank you.

Cleaning up the order is Mark “The Shark” Stoeckinger and Alan “Spankin’” Rankin for Star Trek. CLIPPETY CLOP! This here is the dark horse of the bunch. Not quite sure that it’s gonna win any other awards - which might just work in its favor - but it does have one thing these other chumps don’t…lasers. I have no idea how the Academy feels about lasers and teleporting and space and whatnot, but I can’t resist the sound of a good laser and I have to say that 2009 didn’t have nearly enough of that to go around. Watch out for the Trek, folks, this one’s a contender.

And finally we have Michael Silvers and Tom Myers for…Up? No, I don’t think so. Earns my pick for best movie of the year, but talking dogs doesn’t make up for zero explosions. Boooooooooooooo. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
But all in all, I think I speak for everyone…scratch that…I know I speak for everyone when I say that this was one hell of a year for hearing things in movies. So many sounds, so many edits, words truly can’t describe the sheer excitement rumbling in my bowels right now.
So until next year, folks, keep listening.

Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #22: Cut the Crap Movie Reviews

It’s Blusterin’ Time!

And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you’ve asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.

If you’re new to this feature or need a refresher, click the label at the bottom of this post and see the first few posts. Otherwise, here’s the basics:

What I’ll do is list a site; you’re asked to critique it. But here’s the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don’t leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymous, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. Also, be specific, and naturally, don’t be rude. If I deem anything inappropriate, I’ll have no problem deleting the comment.

So, go to the site listed below, familiarize yourself with it for a few minutes, then come back and leave some constructive criticism and/or comments that you have.

If you’re up for this treatment for your site (and you’re a LAMB), send me an email with the subject “Bluster Me!” If you’ve already done so, no need to do it again - you’re on the list, and these will be going up in order of when I received your email (by the way, it could take a while for your site to be Blustered, since I don’t run this more than once a week or so).
