LAMBcast #86: Whatcha Been Watchin’ Lately?

This episode was supposed to be posted sometime last weekend, but instead I decided to have a terrible stomach ache that ended with me getting my appendix cut out on Saturday night.

All is well, though, and I’m back to deliver to you another gangbusters edition of WBWL, where we cover films from the 60s, 70s, 80s on up through this year. In on this one was myself as host, joined by my co-host Nick, Courtney, Sam, and the Official Twitterer of the LAMB, Joel. I offer slight apologies at the now-dated Netflix/Qwikster/Facebook discsussions; still valid and entertaining, but I’m guessing you might have heard a little bit about them all by now.

Note: I’m having an issue with the Podomatic embeddable player; will update and include as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Music provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod’s Incompetech website. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service. The LAMBcast loves feedback, too. Either here in the comments section or to dylan@manilovefilms.com or to our Facebook page. Also, we’re on iTunes, and would still love a review, even if it’s a bad one.

LAMBcast #83: David Cronenberg

In honor of the recent Director’s Chair blog-a-thon celebrating his catalog, the latest LAMBcast takes a look at the work of David Cronenberg, film by film. First-time host James walked Joel, Dan Heaton and first-time LAMBcaster Alan through the eccentric Canadian’s film, and it might surprise you to learn which is the group’s collective favorite. (I’d say “be gentle” to James, but he did a pretty great job his first time out.)

Movie of the Month/LAMBcast #80: The Long Kiss Goodnight

Renny Harlin’s 1996 film The Long Kiss Goodnight was, for better or worse, mostly left behind by audiences. With a $65 million budget and close to $100 million in worldwide receipts, it undoubtedly made money, but its $33 million gross in the United States stamped the film as a failure in spite of overall positive reviews. More to the point, since its release, it seems to have been largely forgotten by film fans, wedged somewhere in between the boffo successes of its predecessors like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard and more celebrated but arguably (or not) much worse films from the likes of Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme. The film stars Geena Davis as an amnesiac assassin and Samuel L. Jackson as a disgraced cop who unwittingly becomes embroiled in her affairs.

For those unfamiliar with it, the plot synopsis from IMDb:

“Samantha Caine, suburban homemaker, is the ideal mom to her 8 year old daughter Caitlin. She lives in Honesdale, PA, has a job teaching school and makes the best Rice Krispie treats in town. But when she receives a bump on her head, she begins to remember small parts of her previous life as a lethal, top-secret agent. Her old chums in the Chapter are now out to kill her so she enlists the help of a cheap detective named Mitch. As Samantha remembers more and more of her previous life, she becomes deadlier and more resourceful. Both Mitch and Charly proceed to do the killing thing, the bleeding thing and the shooting thing. “

First up, the links! Thanks to all of the LAMBs that sent in their posts for this edition of the MOTM. Be sure to check out the varied opinions on this forgotten actioner:

* Bonjour Tristesse

* Deny Everything

* Deny Everything (2)

* Man, I Love Films

* Public Transportation Snob

* Surrender to the Void

It’s also time to vote on next month’s movie. I’ve included many of the choices from last month, but swapped a few out to keep it interesting. You have one week to vote.

As we do every month, the LAMBcast is tied in with the MOTM. This time, Dylan, Nick, and Steve were joined by the leading champion of The Long Kiss Goodnight - the man behind the LAMB’s new Twitter account (follow it at @LambThe!), Joel Burman of Deny Everything.

URL: http://www.joelburman.com/
Site Name: Deny Everything
Categories: General, (other) Behind the Scenes in the movie buisness
Rating: PG

What is the main focus of your site?
Express my opinions about films and filmmaking giving nit picky suggestions how it should be done.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
The main long term focus is that Deny Everything should give an accurate view on me as a producer and what kind of films I would like to produce.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
Interactive of course (have you had anyone answer differently??) [Editor: Yes, I have. My favorite is when they just put “no” as an answer.]

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I started out a year ago and moved to selfhosting in september. I haven’t really found my accurate posting pace yet but I aim to have 2-3 bigger posts a week.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Andrey Rublev, Toy Story 3, Long Kiss Goodnight

How did you hear about the LAMB?
I heard about LAMB ages ago but its probably thanks to Castor over at Anomalous Material that I am applying.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that’s not listed above.
