Trailer Talk Thursday: Warrior and Hesher
I’m a huge sucker for sports movies, especially ones where a lot is on the line. Now I realize that seems like most sports films (seeing as how they play for trophies, state championships or pride and if they lose they get nothing) but the ones where the contenders have literally everything to lose seem a lot more powerful to me. And Gavin O’ Connor knows exactly how to make sports movies like that. He previously wrote and directed Miracle, one of my favorite sports movies, and he seems to continue his sports movie greatness with an MMA film called Warrior.
Warrior follows two brothers: Tommy and Brendan. Tommy (Hardy) is a marine with a lot of problems. He’s haunted by his time oversees, his father is an alcoholic, him and his brother are estranged and he hasn’t got a whole lot to live for. So what does he do? He decides to become an MMA fighter and win a tournament with the biggest purse in MMA history. Brendan (Joel Edgerton) is basically living paycheck to paycheck and is in a ton of debt, which is putting a huge strain of his family life as well as his work life. He needs an out, he needs a release and he needs to be able to support his family. So what does he do? Same thing as Tommy. Win that purse and help his family rise up from the muck they’ve been living in. Needless to say Tommy vs Brendan is the inevitable result and now we just have to wait until September to see how that turns out.

So far I think it looks great. Hardy and Edgerton are both good actors and they seem to deliver enough dramatic weight to make you really care about them and want them to win. The problem is there can be only one. By the end of the trailer I was really on the edge of my seat. I want to see how it all turns out. And for that I think the people who made the trailer did a good job. So here’s hoping the film lives up to my initial hype.
Next up is Jo-Go as Hesher-
I barely know how to explain this movie. Jo-Go is a drifter named Hesher helping out two random people with their current crisis. These two people are Paul, a father who is grief stricken, and TJ, his son who is in a rut and can’t make friends besides a grocery store clerk played by Natalie Portman. Hesher crashes at their house one day and seems to help them the only way he knows how: by being as crazy and wacky as possible in an attempt to get them out of their predicament. It’s strange, it’s sweet and it’s Jo-Go being all zen like and stoner crazy. I like it.

I think it’s worth a look. Hesher comes out May 13th.
