Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Buster Keaton

Buster KeatonImage via WikipediaSorry this post is a bit late. I have a cold and I’ve been busy sneezing and trying to get well.

Five LAMBs knew the answer to the last question. I’ll bet there were even more who knew this Hollywood factoid, but people were probably distracted by the holiday.

Here’s the last question again:

Name the actor/production company owner who was reputedly given his famous nickname by Harry Houdini.

The answer:

Buster Keaton

According to busterkeaton.com, Houdini was sharing the bill in a theater with Buster’s parents when he saw six-month-old Buster tumble down a flight of stairs. He said, “What a buster your kid took!” and the future actor and production company head became known as Buster from that point on.

Here are the LAMBs who knew the answer:

Marilyn Ferdinand from Ferdy on Films

Dean Treadway from filmicability with Dean Treadway

Stacia from She Blogged By Night

Nell Minow from The Movie Mom

Rachel from Rachel’s Reel Reviews

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that has the same title — but not the same plot — as a film about a soap opera writer.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Dark Victory

Dark VictoryImage via WikipediaI got my butt kicked royally with the November 8 question, so I was determined to give you a really hard one last time. It must have been difficult, because no one even submitted a guess. But to be fair, you would have to have a freakish knowledge of film (or at least of the movie Dark Victory) to have answered it correctly.

Here’s the last question again:

Name the movie that has a character named Elvis who is a Vermont mailman.

The answer:

Dark Victory, starring Bette Davis

Elvis the mailman appears only for a moment after Bette Davis’ character gets married and goes to live on a Vermont farm. I just happened to be watching Dark Victory when it was time to cook up the next question. Elvis the mailman walked onscreen for his minute of fame and became the subject of the next quiz.

Here’s the next question:

Name the Oscar-nominated movie that was produced by the daughter of a gossip columnist and had previously been both a play and a silent film.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie’s name
2. Your name
3. Your blog’s name
4. Your blog’s URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Untamed Heart

Christian Slater, 2004Image via WikipediaI suppose there’s some sort of Zen balancing going on, because I stumped the LAMBs for the first time with the October 25th question and then the LAMBs turned around and thumped me on the last question. It was a massacre; a whole herd of LAMBs got the answer right.

See the bottom of this post for the next question, which I assure you will have nothing to do with Christian Slater.

Here’s the last question again:

Name the 1990s movie that had the U.S. working title The Baboon Heart.

The answer:

Untamed Heart, starring Christian Slater, Marisa Tomei and Rosie Perez

I didn’t think that many people would know about this movie, but I was clearly wrong. I knew someone who worked on the film, so I was aware of the working title while the movie was still in production.

Here are the LAMBS who knew the answer:

John from FlickRater

Steve Johnston from The Film Cynics

Rachel from Rachel’s Reel Reviews

Wendymoon from Movie Viewing Girl

Scott Malthouse from Super Movie Time

Andrew Wickliffe from The Stop Button

Marc Eastman from Are You Screening?

Jess from Insight Into Entertainment

DJ Heinlein from MATTE HAVOC

Dean Treadway from filmicability with Dean Treadway

Nick from Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob

TC Kirkham from Popcorn N Roses

Anders from Cut, Print, Review

GD from The Critical Critics

Colleeny from 353 Haiku Movie Review

Dylan Fields (aka our fearless leader) from Blog Cabins

Stacia from She Blogged By Night

Kirby Holt from Movie Dearest

Lisa from Storywh0re

Shannon Ridler from Movie Moxie

Eugene from Hollywood Chainsaw Blogger

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that has a character named Elvis who is a Vermont mailman.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie’s name
2. Your name
3. Your blog’s name
4. Your blog’s URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Bed of Roses

Film poster for Bed of RosesImage via WikipediaI finally did it; I stumped the LAMBs! No one got the answer to the last question. Now let’s see if I managed to make the next question equally hard.

See the bottom of this post for the next question.

Here’s the last question again:

Name the movie that features an erstwhile Wall Streeter who likes to go to story hour for children at the public library.

The answer:

Bed of Roses, starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Christian Slater leaves Wall Street after a personal tragedy so he can live an easier life, which includes delivering flowers and listening to story time at the New York Public Library. In his new capacity as a delivery person who likes to see people’s reactions when he comes to their homes with flowers, he runs across Mary Stuart Masterson’s character, who isn’t quite ready for the love he has to offer.

Christian Slater is convincing as a formerly damaged but healing person, and Mary Stuart Masterson is equally adept at conveying how almost irretrievably damaged her character became after a rough childhood. But it all works out in the end, making Bed of Roses a satisfying way for romantic-movie lovers to spend a few hours.

Here’s the next question:

Name the 1990s movie that had the U.S. working title The Baboon Heart.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie’s name
2. Your name
3. Your blog’s name
4. Your blog’s URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Winter Passing

Winter PassingImage via WikipediaThere were three submissions for this quiz and only one was correct. I keep trying to make the questions hard enough to stump all the LAMBs, but I haven’t succeeded yet!

See the bottom of this post for the next question.

Here’s the last question again:

A movie featured a character who slept outside in his yard on a bed with an end table and lamp on either side of it. Which actor played the outdoor-snoozing character and what is the name of the movie?

The answer:

Ed Harris as Don Holden in Winter Passing

Winter Passing is a dreary but still marginally interesting study of a strange family, which includes a father who is an eccentric writer (hence the sleeping outdoors), and a daughter, played by Zooey Deschanel. There’s also an odd duck caretaker portrayed by Will Farrell, who plays against his usual type by being pretty subdued.

Here’s the winning LAMB:

Brian Dutkewich from The Cynical Blog named both Ed Harris and Winter Passing correctly.

The following LAMBs get honorable mention for their guesses:

Dylan from Blog Cabins guessed Sam Rockwell in Box of Moonlight. This was disqualified because Sam Rockwell’s character only sort-of sleep outdoors on a bedroom set; his bedroom furniture was actually located in part of a trailer open to the outdoors. Other furniture in his “house” was located outdoors though.

Dean Treadway from filmicability with Dean Treadway guessed Harvey Atkin in Meatballs and Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Neither of the characters slept in their own yards, so these don’t qualify.

Here’s the next question:

A movie character confesses to someone over a hot fudge sundae in a New Jersey diner that he/she murdered a doorman, cut him up, put the pieces into plastic bags in the freezer and was in the process of throwing him away, bit by bit. Which actor/actress played that character and what is the name of the movie?

(This question’s a bit grim. Sorry!)

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. Both parts of the answer
2. Your name
3. Your blog’s name
4. Your blog’s URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: The Grand

Film poster for The Grand.Image via Wikipedia Okay, this is more like it. I made the last question harder and only one person got the answer. One other LAMB gave it his all and submitted multiple guesses, but unfortunately none of them were correct. I like that he tried so hard though!

See the bottom of this post for the next question.

Here’s the last question again:

A movie was released sometime in the last decade that had a scene featuring a character wearing a yarmulke covered with images of playing cards. Name the movie and the actor.

The answer:

Brett Ratner in The Grand

For those who haven’t seen it, The Grand is a mockumentary about a winner-take-all poker tournament. Similar to Christopher Guest’s movies (though Guest wasn’t involved), there was only a loose script and most of the dialog was improvised. Brett Ratner was only on-screen for a few minutes, but his yarmulke covered in playing cards was definitely attention-getting.

Woody Harrelson, Dennis Farina, David Cross, Richard Kind, Cheryl Hines and Michael McKean star in The Grand, along with other great improvisational comedians. Everyone’s performances were great, but what made it really worth watching for me was Chris Parnell’s (30 Rock’s Dr. Spaceman) take on the obsessive-compulsive characteristics of some actual professional poker players — absolutely hilarious.

Here’s our only winning LAMB:

DJ Heinlein from MATTE HAVOC

Dean Treadway from filmicability with Dean Treadway gets honorable mention for his guesses:

Martin Landau in Rounders
Eliott Gould in Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12 or Ocean’s 13
Adam Goldberg in The Hebrew Hammer

Here’s the next question:

A movie featured a character who slept outside in his yard on a bed with an end table and lamp on either side of it. Which actor played the outdoor-snoozing character and what is the name of the movie?

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. Both parts of the answer
2. Your name
3. Your blog’s name
4. Your blog’s URL
