Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: The Butterfly Effect

Cover of "The Butterfly Effect (Infinifil...Cover via Amazon

No one guessed the answer to the last quiz. That’s not surprising; it was pretty out there.

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie in which an actor whose birthday is at the end of this month (September) wears a wig made of his own hair.

The answer:

Eric Stoltz, whose birthday is September 30, wore a wig made of his own hair in The Butterfly Effect. Personally, that would creep me out. But no one is paying me millions of dollars to act in movies; maybe the money helps make it less gross.

Here’s the next question:

As an homage to Patrick Swayze, this week’s question is about one of his best movies (IMHO):

Name the real-life doctor who was offered a role in Dirty Dancing but turned it down.

Please include the following information in your response:

1. The doctor’s name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: A Christmas Story

Cover of "A Christmas Story (Two-Disc Spe...Cover via Amazon

Four people guessed the answer to the last quiz. There may even be a fifth person, because it seems to me I received another response. But I couldn’t find it, so either I was hallucinating or I accidentally deleted it. If you submitted that missing answer, please let me know and I’ll add your link to this page. (9/14/09 update: The mystery LAMB has been identified as Kirby Holt and his link has been added below.)

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie that lists Melinda Dillon’s name correctly in the opening credits but incorrectly in the ending credits, where she’s listed as “Melinda Dillion.”

The answer:

The movie is A Christmas Story. (It’s never too early to start thinking about holiday movies!) I though it was interesting that the plot points about the tongue sticking to the flagpole and eating Christmas dinner in a Chinese restaurant were taken from A Christmas Story writer Jean Shepherd’s book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, which was compiled from short stories he wrote for Playboy in the 1960s.

Here are the LAMBs who got it right:

Kirby Holt from Movie Dearest

T.L. Bug from The Lightning Bug’s Lair

Fitz from Nevermind Pop Film

Rachel from Rachel’s Reel Reviews

General Disdain from The Critical Critics

And a special thanks to Mike Everleth of www.badlit.com, www.ufilmguide.com and www.ufilmguidetv.com for contributing additional information about this question.

Here’s the next question:

Please include the following information in your response:

2. Your name

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Halloween

Halloween (1978 film)Image via Wikipedia

Two people guessed the answer to the last quiz, which I thought was pretty hard. They’re obviously Alfred Hitchcock fans, Halloween fans or both.

Here’s the question again:

Name the horror film that features two characters who have the same names as characters from two different Alfred Hitchcock movies.

The answer:

Halloween features homages to Alfred Hitchcock in the form of character names pulled from two of his movies: Tommy Doyle was named for Detective Thomas J. Doyle from Rear Window and Sam Loomis came from Psycho.

Here are the LAMBs who got it right:

boylorne from 24 Hours to Midnight: The Blog!

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that lists Melinda Dillon’s name correctly in the opening credits but incorrectly in the ending credits, where she’s listed as “Melinda Dillion.”

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Mutiny on the Bounty

Screenshot from the trailer for the film Mutin...Image via Wikipedia

A lone LAMB got the answer to the last question. I’m amazed anyone got it, considering the age of the movie.

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie that had one cameraman die when a barge capsized during filming and also had two other crew members nearly killed because the ship they were on while shooting was lost at sea for two days.

The answer:

A barge with 55 crew and staff members capsized while shooting exterior scenes for the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty, killing second-unit assistant cameraman Glenn Strong. Tragedy struck again when an 18-foot replica of the Bounty sailing ship carrying two crew members somehow got away from its tow and floated at sea for two days until a search party found it.

One a lighter note, Jimmy Cagney happened to be sailing his boat around California’s Catalina Island while Bounty was being shot. He asked his friend and the movie’s director Frank Lloyd if he could be in the film, so Lloyd had Cagney don a sailor’s uniform so he could spend the day as an uncredited extra. David Niven also played an extra in the movie.

Here’s the winning LAMB:

General Disdain of The Critical Critics

Here’s the next question:

What physical location do 1983’s Flashdance and 1986’s Back to School have in common? (I’m looking something more specific than the city or state.)

Please include the following information in your response:

1. The location’s name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Easter Parade

Cover of "Easter Parade (Special Edition)...Cover of Easter Parade (Special Edition)

There were two-and-a-half correct answers to the last question. I say two-and-a-half because although one of the answers didn’t name the movie I had intended, I haven’t been able to find information that would disqualify the answer.

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie that features an actress/dancer who was not only pregnant while filming but also had to perform most of her dances in a back brace because of an injured back.

The answer:

Easter Parade

Ann Miller was the dancer in question. Sadly, she had been thrown down a flight of stairs by her husband while pregnant and hurt her back. It didn’t stop her though. She just wore a back brace and soldiered on with filming the movie.

Here are the LAMBs who submitted the correct answer:

Nell Minow from The Movie Mom

Wendymoon from Movie Viewing Girl

Coop Cooper from the The Small Town Critic

Coop thought the answer was Debbie Reynolds in Bundle of Joy, because she was pregnant with Carrie Fisher at the time. I couldn’t find any references to her wearing a back brace during the filming of that movie but I didn’t find anything to contradict it either. So Coop gets a link!

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that features cameos by two actors who play in different versions of the same-titled TV show. (Hint: The TV shows are completely unrelated to the movie.)

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: The Doctor

Cover of "The Doctor"Cover of The Doctor

It looks like we had another stumper, because I didn’t get any submissions for the last question.

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie that features three actors who went on to play doctors on the same 1990s television show.

The answer:

The Doctor

William Hurt starred in this brilliant 1991 movie that thrust a doctor with little bedside manner or care for his patients into the healthcare system so he could try to cure his own cancer. Christine Lahti, Mandy Patinkin and Adam Arkin co-starred with Hurt in The Doctor and then went on to play doctors on Chicago Hope, which debuted in 1994.

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that features an actress/dancer who was not only pregnant while filming but also had to perform most of her dances in a back brace because of an injured back.

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Godspell

Cover of "Godspell"Cover of Godspell

Four LAMBs guessed the answer to the last question. I guess I’m going to have to make the questions harder!

Here’s the question again:

Name the movie that features its cast singing a song on top of one of the World Trade Center towers while it was still under construction.

The answer:

Godspell: A Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew

The song was “All For The Best,” which was written by Stephen Schwartz and performed by Victor Garber and the cast on top of one of the World Trade Center towers.

The following LAMBs got the answer right:

Jess of Insight Into Entertainment

Dean Treadway of filmicability with Dean Treadway

Tony Dayoub of Cinema Viewfinder

Deedee of NoirishCity

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that features three actors who went on to play doctors on the same 1990s television show.

I could make this really difficult by asking you to name the actors, the television show and the movie. But I won’t. So to qualify, your answer only has to include the following:

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Jesus Christ Superstar

Cover of "Jesus Christ Superstar (Special...Cover via Amazon

This time only one person got the answer right. She’s not a LAMB but no one said LAMB readers can’t participate!

Here’s the question again:

David Cassidy (The Partridge Family) and Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) were both considered for the part of a historical character in a movie, but neither got the role. Who was the character and what was the movie?

The answer:

Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar

Both the teen idols were offered the part of Jesus but it ultimately went to Ted Neeley. That turned out well for Ted, not only because he got to play Jesus again in a 2006 stage version of Jesus Christ Superstar, but also because he met his wife on the set when the movie was being filmed.

Ruth Donnelly of Ruth’s Vegetable Soup got the answer right.

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that features its cast singing a song on top of one of the World Trade Center towers while it was still under construction.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Ghost Town

Cover of "Ghost Town"Cover of Ghost Town

You’re a hard group to stump, so I’m always surprised when no one guesses the answer to one of these movie quiz questions. But it seems I was able to get one past the LAMBs with the last question.

Here it is again:

Name the movie that features a scene with an elevator full of people, but when the elevator door opens and the camera points at the mirror that directly faces the door, there’s no one in the reflection.

The answer:

Ghost Town

The people in question were ghosts, which is why they couldn’t be seen in the mirror.

I truly enjoyed this Ricky Gervais-Greg Kinnear-Téa Leone vehicle, in which Ricky Gervais plays a sour dentist who can see ghosts. That plot might seem ho-hum if you haven’t seen it, but for me the combination of a great script, those actors and a colorful New York backdrop made it rise way above my expectations.

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that briefly featured its director as a college student who yells out a window while the opening credits roll.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Saved!

Saved!Image via Wikipedia

Two LAMBs answered the question correctly for the last quiz, and another submitted the name of a different film that also qualified. That’s the danger of making quizzes vague so they’re hard to answer; it leaves room for multiple correct answers!

Here’s the last question again:

Name the movie with a plot that turns on one of the character’s interaction with a pool ladder.

The answer:

Saved!

This is one of my favorite teen movies. High schooler Mary (played by Jenna Malone) plays an underwater game in her pool with boyfriend Dean (played by Chad Faust), during which they tell each other secrets. When Dean reveals that he thinks he’s gay, Mary gets so confused that she swims into the pool ladder and bonks her head. This sets off a chain of events that neither could have ever expected.

Here are the LAMBs who knew the answer:

Alex Kittle of Film Forager

SamuraiFrog of Electronic Cerebrectomy

Phil Concannon of Phil on Film guessed that the movie was Catherine Breillat’s À ma soeur!. Although I didn’t see the movie, the Roger Ebert review of À ma soeur! refers to a character in a pool who “imagines a romantic rivalry for her affections between–a pier and a ladder.” That’s not exactly the type of interaction I had in mind when I posed the question but it was still a good guess. So Phil gets a link. (We’re pretty easy around here.)

Here’s the next question:

Name the movie that features a scene with an elevator full of people, but when the elevator door opens and the camera points at the mirror that directly faces the door, there’s no one in the reflection.

To qualify, your answer must include the following:

1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL
