Tom Hardy has been acting in high-profile films since the early 2000s (Black Hawk Dawn, Star Trek: Nemesis), but it wasn’t until 2008 when he made a name for himself, first in Guy Ritchie’s “comeback” film RockNRolla, and subsequently in the film of the day, Bronson. The sixth film from Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive) is, well…have a look at the plot synopsis from IMDb, as it might be the most concise the story can be told as::

“In 1974, a hot-headed 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post office. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to 7 years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. During that time, Michael Petersen, the boy, faded away and ‘Charles Bronson,’ his superstar alter ego, took center stage. Inside the mind of Bronson - a scathing indictment of celebrity culture.”

So many films, so little time. There was some worry early on that there would be overlap with a lot of our individual top fives, but that proved not to really be the case, as there’s a wide array of interesting flicks coming down the pike in the next few months. So many films that (spoiler alert!) not a single person chose either of Spielberg’s flicks or Scorsese’s kids’ movie. Renny Harlin’s 1996 film The Long Kiss Goodnight was, for better or worse, mostly left behind by audiences. With a $65 million budget and close to $100 million in worldwide receipts, it undoubtedly made money, but its $33 million gross in the United States stamped the film as a failure in spite of overall positive reviews. More to the point, since its release, it seems to have been largely forgotten by film fans, wedged somewhere in between the boffo successes of its predecessors like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard and more celebrated but arguably (or not) much worse films from the likes of Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme. The film stars Geena Davis as an amnesiac assassin and Samuel L. Jackson as a disgraced cop who unwittingly becomes embroiled in her affairs.

For those unfamiliar with it, the plot synopsis from IMDb:

“Samantha Caine, suburban homemaker, is the ideal mom to her 8 year old daughter Caitlin. She lives in Honesdale, PA, has a job teaching school and makes the best Rice Krispie treats in town. But when she receives a bump on her head, she begins to remember small parts of her previous life as a lethal, top-secret agent. Her old chums in the Chapter are now out to kill her so she enlists the help of a cheap detective named Mitch. As Samantha remembers more and more of her previous life, she becomes deadlier and more resourceful. Both Mitch and Charly proceed to do the killing thing, the bleeding thing and the shooting thing. “
