Clash of the Lambs: Ridley Scott

The board it set! The pieces are moving! Let there be blood!!!

What it is LAMBs!! Sebastian from Films From the Supermassive Black Hole here with a brand new feature. In the tradition of the gladiators, boxers, and Lamb Action Hero, I present Clash of the Lambs! Every week, I pit character against character, and leave it to you to decide the victor! What’s that? You cheer for blood? By jove, you’ll have it!

For this inaugural edition of Clash of the Lambs, I am throwing three characters into the ring! They all hark from films directed by one, Ridley Scott! There is a clear favorite in the mix, but the other two prove to be more than formidable opponents!

Fighter 1: Maximus Decimus Meridius

Once a celebrated general in the Roman Army, Maximus is betrayed by the man he calls Caesar and forced into a life of slavery! In the gladiatorial arena, he quickly gains fame for his natural skills as a fighter and leader! Skilled with all types of sharp things that can kill you, adept on foot and on horse, and with the ability to rally a fierce group of pissed off gladiators behind him, Maximus is not one with whom you mess! Hey, he killed the Roman Emperor in front of thousands of people! Definitely don’t want to mess with him!

Fighter 2: Balian of Ibelin

Raised unaware of his true heritage and potential, Balian was just a humble blacksmith. That is until the day his father, a great knight in the Crusades comes and takes him on a journey to the Holy Land. Once there, he quickly gains notoriety thanks to his acceptance of Muslims and his almost stupid levels of bravery! The man led a charge against a force far greater than his to give the citizens of a city time to get within its walls! That’s a righteous man if ever I’ve seen one! He successfully conducted the defense of Jerusalem against an enormous Saracen force, and managed to seduce Eva Green during all of this! Skilled with a broadsword, on foot and on horse, and with the ability to rally the dejected and disheartened soldiers of Jerusalem to fight, the thing that gives Balian an edge is his understanding of his enemies! He never underestimates them! A smart enemy is sometimes the most dangerous!

Fighter 3: Robin Hood

Though he begins his story as a lowly, but incredibly skilled archer in the army of King Richard, Robin Hood, upon returning home to England, takes up the mantle as the countries defender against tyranny, oppression, the French, and Mark Strong! He is instrumental in rallying the divided forces of England under one flag, and leading them to glorious victory! He then starts his campaign against the corrupt politicians that rule the country! Extremely skilled with a bow and arrow, he’s no slouch when it comes to sword play! He doesn’t posses the leadership skills of Maximus or the smarts of Balian, but what he does have is the speed and agility of a true killer! He and his merry men can easily ambush you before you have even the slightest clue where they are! Though he’s new to the party, Maximus and Balian will have their hands full contending with him!

Before the battle commences, I have a request for all you LAMBs! Let’s not make this a popularity contest! Think it over! Who would actually win in this battle if all three characters were thrown into a pit, given their choice weapons, and turned on each other? They all have their strengths! They all have their weaknesses! Sound good? Faaaaaaaantastic!

Alright then! The crowd is going wild! The trumpets are wailing! What’s that? I’m being told that the contestants are ready to begin! Let’s make it happen!

3! 2! 1! FIGHT!!

By the way, if you have a particular match up that you would like to see featured, don’t be a coy little sheep! Sound off! Write up a comment for all the world to see, or if you’re feeling private, send me an e-mail at sebguts10@yahoo.com.

Trailer Talk Thursday: Super Bowl Special

Hello everyone I’m Travis McCollum of the Movie Encyclopedia and welcome to another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday where I let you all in on some of the latest previews to hit the screen.

Today is a special episode. With every year comes a new Super Bowl. And while a good portion of us care about who is playing and who will win the game most people honestly only care about the commercials. Well while this year had some decently funny commercials (Doritos Ninja, Betty White Snickers, Bridgestone Tires) a big highlight of this year was the TV spots that ran for a whole lot of movies coming out soon, some of which we haven’t heard much of. Since they are usually only about 30 seconds to a minute long it’s hard to REALLY consider them true trailers but still a piece of something, in my opinion at least, is good enough. I don’t remember order of appearance or anything but thanks to traileraddict.com I have gotten all the TV spots together and will discuss them all for ya.
First up: Brooklyn’s Finest:

Alright where to start? As a huge fan of Training Day it’s hard for me NOT to be excited for this film. If you’ve seen the full trailer then you’ll get a better idea of the plot but this TV spot does a good job of highlighting some main points from the movie:

  • Ethan Hawke is a cop not above taking drug money to help his family
  • Wesley Snipes is a gangster who is getting watched by undercover officer Don Cheadle
  • Richard Gere is an experienced cop who looks like he’s on his last leg
And that’s just from the TV spot. But if you do research you’ll realize that that IS the basic plot. It looks like a good movie and I can’t wait for it to come out.
Second up The Crazies:

I still don’t know what to think about this movie to be honest with you. Part of me thinks that it’s like 28 Days Later but instead of zombies you go crazy, which is a decent enough idea on it’s own, but the more I see the more I think this will just be a mindless slasher film with a few decent scares. I am a huge Timothy Olyphant fan so it’s always good to see him on screen but even this seems like a step down for him. I’m a bit on the fence with this one. I mean:

  • Quarantine a la 28 Days Later….cool
  • Guy on baseball field with shotgun….dumb
  • Guy in shadows…dumb
  • House burning…dumb
  • Timothy Olyphant…cool
  • People strapped in at science facility…interesting and kinda cool
I don’t know…
Next is The Back Up Plan:

No…just no. Jennifer Lopez in a romantic comedy? I’m having flashbacks to Gigli and then throw in water births? Yep that has Oh My God please get me out of here written all over it. Screw bullet points if you see this I will punt you.

Next up is Robin Hood:

As a huge fan of Gladiator it’s good to see the same team coming together to make a new Robin Hood movie. And while I do love the Disney version and Men in Tights this looks like a good, stylistic update to an already awesome character. I mean:
  • Russel Crowe as Robin Hood=awesome
  • Cate Blanchett=awesome in anything
  • Scott Brothers=awesome
  • Action scenes, sword fights, epic battles=awesome
Overall it looks pretty awesome I must say. I can’t wait for it to come out.
Next up is Alice in Wonderland:

As a huge fan of the source material and the original Disney film I am a bit hesitant. While I do love Tim Burton, I’m actually getting tired of the Tim Burton film. Is it impossible for him to make a movie where:

  • Johnny Depp isn’t in it (I love him but c’mon!)
  • Helena Bonham Carter isn’t in it (see above)
  • There aren’t any creepy visuals with disturbing tendencies
  • There isn’t a dark sense of humor
  • He doesn’t destroy a childhood memory of mine
I don’t know. I mean it looks interesting but the whole over the top creepy 3-D sequel to Alice in Wonderland just doesn’t interest me that much.
Next up Prince of Persia:

Grrr…I hate video game movies. I just hate them. I don’t care if Martin Scorsese directs it I refuse to see it. I have been lied to TOO many times by a bunch of other films to believe that video game movies are any good. This one visually looks good but:

  • Jake Gyllenhaal as the prince
  • it being a Disney movie
  • the rest of the cast
  • the special effects
just turn me off. No way…nope not seeing this.

Next The…SON OF A…The Wolfman

Well this trailer adds nothing…wait strike that it adds ONE line of dialogue. This film visually looks good but ultimately looks like a huge disappointment and a poorly acted gore fest that isn’t going to be enjoyable. Shame since the franchise (and this film too) could have been good. I will say kudos to Hugo Weaving though for still being awesome in a handlebar moustache and a top hat.

Next up is The Last Airbender:

After making a few crappy movies in a row it looks like M. Night is actually making a decent comeback. Based on one of my favorite cartoons in the past decade, it looks pretty close to the show and it looks visually stunning and I’m actually excited for it. There’s not a whole lot more to say then awesome.

Finally is Shutter Island:

I cannot WAIT for this movie!

  • The setting
  • The characters
  • The story (based on one of my favorite Dennis Lehane novels)
  • The director and writer
  • The tip of the hat to his previous films
This trailer only makes me wish that this long delayed thriller would just come out already!!
But these are just my opinions. Tell me what you think. Comment down below and let me know.
So until next time I am Travis McCollum of the Movie Encyclopedia and this has been Trailer Talk Thursday.
