SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: Larry & Burt’s Gut Rot

Larry & Burt’s Gut Rot is a 6 part series based on the plight of a pizza delivery driver and his disturbed, unemployed brother. PRESS RELEASE/SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: Attack of the Vegan Zombies!

Jim Townsend, director of Attack of the Vegan Zombies! has screeners available to parties interested in reviewing his film.

A short synopsis of the film can be found here.

Some reviews:

“Jim Townsend pays careful attention to all of the characters present ? even when it comes to cliche characters like the nerds or the airhead party girls ? allowing them to emerge with three-dimensional life, not as cut-out caricatures. It is all shot with a professionalism that belies the self-confessed micro-budgeted nature of the film.”

- Richard Scheib, Moria, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Film Review.

“This is the movie you watch with an eye to the future-superior production values, especially Max Fischer’s cinematography, some good acting, and a lot of promise for movies yet to come. Plus ATTACK OF THE VEGAN ZOMBIES serves as a model for those people who say, “It can’t be done here.” To those people I say – yes it can, but it’s up to you to make it happen.”

- John Porter, Fangoria.com

All the information about it can be found at http://www.attackoftheveganzombies.com/. Here is the trailer: www.previewreels.com/veganzombies or you can find it on youtube. Attack of the Vegan Zombies! also has a Facebook page and feel free to become a fan.

PLUG: Blanc de Blanc

Some of you may know fellow LAMB member Lucas McNelly of 100 films. In fact, a couple of you reviewed his short film gravida, back in 2007. Well, he’s a got a new film out and is looking for people to review it.

The film, Blanc de Blanc, was shot and edited to a fine cut in 2 weeks (for $970) as part of #2wkfilm, a friendly challenge among filmmakers on Twitter. It premiered last month in Pittsburgh and is currently starting the self-distribution and festival circuits.

Here’s where you come in. Lucas is looking for bloggers willing to write about his film, pretty much in any way they’d like. Naturally, the most obvious way would be to review the film, and if you’d like to do that, there’s a screener you can download. Or, you might find it more compelling to write about the insanity that is the #2wkfilm process (roughly 4 days to shoot, 10 to edit a feature). Or, if you’d like to interview Lucas about any of it, that works too.

If you’d like a link to the screener, email Lucas (lmcnelly [at] gmail.com) and he’ll hook you up with whatever you need.

Blanc de Blanc is about a man (Jason Kirsch) who arrives, suddenly, in Pittsburgh and falls for a woman (Rachel Shaw) she meets on the street. Only, his past life isn’t willing to let him go without a fight. Digging Pitt called it “a rare thing, a nesting-box film that succeeds.” Jim at the Moviezzz Blog said it was his best film yet.

Here’s the teaser [sorry for the butchered shot; YouTube’s video embedding won’t get any smaller for this clip]. There’s another, proper trailer coming, but Lucas needs some pull quotes from critics to fully sell the film (hint, hint).

Hopefully, we’ll be able to help one of our own get the word out.

PRESS RELEASE/SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: The Hitchhiking Movie

The Hitchhiking Movie to Premiere at Secret City Film Festival

Nashville, TN — September 24, 2009 — Nashville based filmmakers Ryan Jeanes and Phillip Hullquist are premiering their first feature film The Hitchhiking Movie on October 9th at the Secret City Film Festival in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The movie follows the pair’s attempt to cross the entire continental United States in less than a week, using nothing more than their thumbs.

“After over a year of work on this project, we can finally see The Hitchhiking Movie play on the big screen,” said Hullquist, who also served as editor for the film, which is already receiving positive reviews and press. First time filmmakers often times get bogged down in the overwhelming amount of work involved in actually completing a movie, but as Jeanes explains, “The real work is done in the editing room. Successfully filming our hitchhiking adventure was an accomplishment, but I was more excited when we had the finished product. The positive reviews have just made the experience sweeter.”

The full press release can be read here.

Additional media is available for download here:
http://www.11visions.com/media/hitchhiking/

Ryan and Phillip are already working on their second adventure film titled The River is Life which tells stories from the people they meet on a paddling trip down the entire Mississippi River. Flim blogger Mike Longaecker wrote a short piece on the project here. They’re just over 1000 miles into the trip and you can observe their progress from this website: http://www.theriverislife.com.

Additionally, screener requests can be sent to phillip@11visions.com. Phillip won’t be able to send out any more DVDs until October due to more taping work on the Mississippi River project, but will get them out promptly after leaving New Orleans.

PRESS RELEASE/SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: The Notorious Newman Brothers

The Notorious Newman Brothers is the new feature from hardcore underground filmmakers The Butler Brothers of Substance Production and Ryan Noel of Toronto. It takes the piss out of gangster films as well as satirizing the indie filmmaking process in general. The film is currently touring the film festival circuit where it has already been awarded with a Best of Fest, Best Screenplay, and comedy feature awards.

We describe the film as The Sopranos meets Spinal Tap and are looking to get it in front of as many eyes as possible. We want to expose ourselves!

PRESS RELEASE/SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: Lovely By Surprise

My name is James, and I work for the fellow who wrote and directed the award-winning feature, Lovely By Surprise. It is finally being released on DVD at the end of this month, and I want to be sure you get to see it.

We think this movie is pretty special and worth your consideration, therefore we wish to provide you with one of our limited screeners to enjoy, and — we hope — relay the experience.

What sets Kirt Gunn’s film apart from most other independents which go straight to DVD is the extremely high-level of craftmanship; the exceptional quality of acting; the beautiful photography; the stirring soundtrack; the innovative storytelling.

Please confirm by returning an address for delivery, and I will forward a screener right away. Send requests to lovelybysurprise@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, here is some additional information/links for the film:

There are four clips, plus the trailer, on our Vimeo channel (we’re releasing another couple of scenes in the coming fortnight): http://www.vimeo.com/lovelybysurprise

We tweet shiny choruses of gold each day: http://www.twitter.com/lovelybysrprise

The official release is July 7, by the way, when these will be our main online go-to’s:

Netflix
Blockbuster

Here is an excerpt from the press release:

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Seattle International Film Festival, and the New Filmmakers Forum Award at St. Louis International Film Festival, LOVELY BY SURPRISE established itself as a cinemagoers favorite.

Leading a true ensemble cast, Carrie Preston turns in a moving performance as Marian; while Austin Pendleton, playing her literary mentor/ex-lover, and his wife, played by Kate Burton, try to keep Marian from falling apart before finishing her first novel.

In the second of three interwoven threads, Richard Masur does his best to buttress a bereft Reg Rogers, until Michael Chernus and Dallas Roberts literally escape from Marian’s developing manuscript to emerge in the “real” world.

Shot by Steve Yedlin and amplified by the astral sounds of Shelby Bryant, with songs by the visionary Stephin Merritt, Gunn’s film displays a beautiful palate while remaining a defiantly independent labor of love featuring cameo performances from legendary members of the Memphis arts scene, with Tom Waits performing the closing song.

Lastly, I’m attaching a pic that we haven’t released to anybody. Taken by Trey Clark, it is of Carrie Preston (Marian) and Dallas Roberts (Mopekey).

Thank you,
James Graham

SCREENER/REVIEW OPPORTUNITY: Evil Things

EVIL THINGS is headed for the film festival circuit and earnestly seeking distribution.

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS: These Latinos are not waiting for Hollywood to knock on their door.

When Dominic Perez was given notice that he would be let go from his job at an investment bank here in NYC, he contacted his friend Mario Valdez about what he should do. Mario quickly replied. “I have vacation time coming up. Let’s just make that movie you keep talking about.” Dominic replied, “That’s so crazy…ok, let’s do it!” So Dominic and Mario transformed Mario’s West New York, New Jersey apartment into a mini-production studio and began their filmmaking odyssey. The end result is Evil Things, a feature-length horror movie about a group of American teens being terrorized by unknown assailants.

MARIO VALDEZ came to NYC 10 years ago from Pergamino, Argentina looking for new opportunities. One day, while walking in Central Park, he saw a group of people shooting a movie (Cruel Intentions). After spending an entire day observing the crew create cinematic magic, Mario realized that he had found his true calling. As many immigrants before him, Mario started working 12 to 14 hour days in local NYC restaurants while taking English classes at night. After getting work as a production assistant on several independent video productions, Mario met writer/director Dominic Perez who was looking for a co-producer with whom he could produce a first time feature film. Mario didn’t let his lack of feature film production experience stop him from taking on yet another challenge. From pre-production to production and distribution and beyond, Mario is making it happen.

DOMINIC PEREZ began producing videos shortly after his older brother brought home a “hot” video camera that he bought from some homeless guy on the street in the Bronx. His older brother quickly became bored with his new toy, but Dominic’s interest grew each time he used this amazing little gadget to capture reality. After making several no-budget comedies and horror shorts using his family members as “talent”, Dominic joined DCTV (Downtown Community Television) where he worked as an unpaid intern. At DCTV he began producing, shooting and editing his own videos and also worked on projects for many other independent producers. For the past 10 years Dominic has been working at various investment banks while concurrently pursuing his interest in video. Dominic has shot and edited everything from knee surgery to documentaries and weddings and bar-mitzvahs.

Additional Quotes from Producer Mario Valdez

ON THE AUDITION PROCESS:
“We auditioned so many New York area actors. We saw the good, the bad, and the ugly, and even the what the f*ck was that?”

ON THE PRODUCTION PROCESS:
“We were in the middle of the woods at 2:00 am, it was 17 degrees below zero, I was cold and hungry and my toes were frozen. I suddenly turned to myself and realized…wow, I love this.”

ON DISTRIBUTION:
“I had no idea that the hardest work of filmmaking begins once the film is completed.”

Additional quotes from writer/director Dominic Perez

“Making a movie is good therapy. You’re so terrified that you don’t have time to think about your problems.“

“We had been planning our very tight shooting schedule for months. Everything was perfectly planned, and then a snowstorm hit the northeastern United States on our first day of shooting. A good friend said that it would be a blessing or a curse. We decided to allow the storm to be our blessing, and so it was.”

“In the world of low-budget indie filmmaking, you should plan every detail and then let it all hang loose and just make it happen. If your main actress becomes incredibly ill and you only have 1 day to shoot something, instantly re-write the script and make her illness part of your story. The story Gods must want her to be sick for that particular scene. Reality is usually the best fiction.”

Thanks
Dominic Perez & Mario Valdez
