Poll results; new poll

As a fitting close to the Director’s Chair focus on Steven Soderbergh, I asked you all what your favorite picture of his was, from a selection of his more prominent/popular films.

I must say that I’m a bit surprised at the results. The Limey more or less walked away with it, taking 25% of the 59 votes, followed by Out of Sight (my vote) with 18% and a tie between Traffic and Ocean’s Eleven for third with 15%. Che took up the rear, earning just 3%, though I imagine it’s lowly placing has more to do with a lack of exposure than anything else.

New poll is gauging your interest in some of the highest-profile movies to be released (in North America) over the next few weeks. Are you like me and more or less “meh” on the lot of them, or are you psyched to see every last one? Either way, there can be only one (vote-getter).

Director’s Chair #4: Day Three

The LAMBs in the Director's Chair #4: Steven Soderbergh.Today marks the last day of our three day event in which we had concentrated upon the directorial career of Steven Soderbergh. The turn out for this event has been tremendously huge and I am hoping that everyone will be willing to return for the fifth installment of the series which will take place in mid-January (more information will be announced soon). For me there is an interesting characteristic about Steven Soderbergh that adds a little bit of attractiveness to his films. He is a pessimistic artist and does not really bother hiding his negative thoughts and feelings. Despite the depressive outlook that he bleeds through in his personal statements about his career he still tends to create stories that people are fascinated in watching. They are enjoyable films, none the less! Recently he has been vocal about the idea of retiring from the practice of filmmaking, but that would be as practical as any member of the Clinton duo actually retiring from public office (or completely removed from the public eye). It will probably not happen any time within the foreseeable future. Despite all of this we will continue to endearingly watch our very own contemporary cinematic Eeyore work his directorial talents into wonderfully entertaining stories.

Director’s Chair #4: Day Two

The LAMBs in the Director's Chair #4: Steven Soderbergh.Did you know that Steven Soderbergh often uses the alias of “Peter Andrews” when he serves as his own director of photography or the occasionally uses the alias of Mary Ann Bernard when he works on the editing of his own films? While shooting Traffic he wanted to be credited for photography and directing, but the Writer’s Guild Association (WGA) would not allow another credit ahead of the writer as stated under their guild regulations. Supposedly, he did not want to list his name too many times in the film’s credits, so he had adopted a couple of pseudonyms as an resolution. Peter Andrews, by the way, would the first name and middle name of his father. Interesting, eh?

Director’s Chair #4: Day One

The LAMBs in the Director's Chair #4: Steven Soderbergh. It may be said that Steven Soderbergh is a film director who has sparked the contemporary revolution of independent American filmmaking when a small time distributor by the name of Miramax had scooped up his film Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). The film threw him in to the public scene of Hollywood and was the prized possession for the Weinstein brothers. Since then Steven Soderbergh has swayed back and forth between the two realms of mainstream filmmaking and indie production. He has proven to be a creative director who is capable of riding the boundary lines between the two sides and still appear to create one film right after another that is treasured by millions of people everywhere. Not only can he present a story that sneaks into the dark corners of someone’s personal life (i.e. The Girlfriend Experience and Sex, Lies, and Videotape), but also complete a sugar coated mainstream film that Hollywood would be thrilled to promote (the Ocean’s Eleven remake and its sequel films). Since this is the first day of our LAMBs in the Director’s Chair series that will be focusing upon his career it might be fitting to include several reviews for the first installment of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise along side a couple of extra films to round out the day. If you are a LAMB member who would like to participate in the Director’s Chair series then jump ahead to the original posting for the series. However, make sure to observe that the deadline for the current installment of the series is December 3rd (it is within reason that I need enough time to add your link to the last day of the event). Without further delay here are the links for today.
