Trailer Talk Thursday: Super Bowl Special
Hello everyone I’m Travis McCollum of the Movie Encyclopedia and welcome to another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday where I let you all in on some of the latest previews to hit the screen.
Alright where to start? As a huge fan of Training Day it’s hard for me NOT to be excited for this film. If you’ve seen the full trailer then you’ll get a better idea of the plot but this TV spot does a good job of highlighting some main points from the movie:
- Ethan Hawke is a cop not above taking drug money to help his family
- Wesley Snipes is a gangster who is getting watched by undercover officer Don Cheadle
- Richard Gere is an experienced cop who looks like he’s on his last leg
I still don’t know what to think about this movie to be honest with you. Part of me thinks that it’s like 28 Days Later but instead of zombies you go crazy, which is a decent enough idea on it’s own, but the more I see the more I think this will just be a mindless slasher film with a few decent scares. I am a huge Timothy Olyphant fan so it’s always good to see him on screen but even this seems like a step down for him. I’m a bit on the fence with this one. I mean:
- Quarantine a la 28 Days Later….cool
- Guy on baseball field with shotgun….dumb
- Guy in shadows…dumb
- House burning…dumb
- Timothy Olyphant…cool
- People strapped in at science facility…interesting and kinda cool
No…just no. Jennifer Lopez in a romantic comedy? I’m having flashbacks to Gigli and then throw in water births? Yep that has Oh My God please get me out of here written all over it. Screw bullet points if you see this I will punt you.
Next up is Robin Hood:
- Russel Crowe as Robin Hood=awesome
- Cate Blanchett=awesome in anything
- Scott Brothers=awesome
- Action scenes, sword fights, epic battles=awesome
As a huge fan of the source material and the original Disney film I am a bit hesitant. While I do love Tim Burton, I’m actually getting tired of the Tim Burton film. Is it impossible for him to make a movie where:
- Johnny Depp isn’t in it (I love him but c’mon!)
- Helena Bonham Carter isn’t in it (see above)
- There aren’t any creepy visuals with disturbing tendencies
- There isn’t a dark sense of humor
- He doesn’t destroy a childhood memory of mine
Grrr…I hate video game movies. I just hate them. I don’t care if Martin Scorsese directs it I refuse to see it. I have been lied to TOO many times by a bunch of other films to believe that video game movies are any good. This one visually looks good but:
- Jake Gyllenhaal as the prince
- it being a Disney movie
- the rest of the cast
- the special effects
Next The…SON OF A…The Wolfman
Well this trailer adds nothing…wait strike that it adds ONE line of dialogue. This film visually looks good but ultimately looks like a huge disappointment and a poorly acted gore fest that isn’t going to be enjoyable. Shame since the franchise (and this film too) could have been good. I will say kudos to Hugo Weaving though for still being awesome in a handlebar moustache and a top hat.
After making a few crappy movies in a row it looks like M. Night is actually making a decent comeback. Based on one of my favorite cartoons in the past decade, it looks pretty close to the show and it looks visually stunning and I’m actually excited for it. There’s not a whole lot more to say then awesome.
Finally is Shutter Island:
I cannot WAIT for this movie!
- The setting
- The characters
- The story (based on one of my favorite Dennis Lehane novels)
- The director and writer
- The tip of the hat to his previous films
